Artist statement

Shaping dreams into form

To be able to shape my dreams and fantasies in tangible form — to see what form those mysterious sparks from within my subconscious will take — is for me what the creative search is all about.

Creating a world of imaginary beings is my way of telling the myths and stories that my inner visions lead me to express. Paint, clay, and bronze are the materials that allow me to share them with others.

My work is multilayered and reflects my life and inspirations, with a focus on faces drawn entirely from imagination. Renaissance portraiture underpins much of what I do — I take my audience on a narrative journey filled with interpretative reflections and fantasies.

Press

The bronze and ceramic and oil creations of sculptor and painter Claudia Cohen are not realistic in any strict sense of the term, but they are precise renditions of her imagination — engaging articulations of the ruminations of her subconscious. With her dazzling style of meticulous detail and feeling for form, the work brings to life a magical cast of characters. There are few artists today who inhabit such an intriguing, unified private world and have such an immediate gift for inviting everyone else into it.

Biography

Education & background

Claudia Cohen has been creating since her earliest years. After studies at the Corcoran School of Art and George Washington University in Washington, DC, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in conjunction with Tufts University.

Sculpture was her primary medium for many years. Her work has since expanded to encompass figurative and narrative painting, informed by studies with celebrated teacher Chester Arnold at the College of Marin.

Her work has been exhibited in museums and galleries across the United States and internationally, and has been described as Comic Surrealism and Magic Realism — terms that aptly capture her feel for humor, pathos, and the fantastical.
